Kidney Failure Symptoms: What You Need to Know

Writer: Dr. Karuturi SubrahmanyamDr. Karuturi Subrahmanyam

The kidneys play a vital role in keeping your body healthy by filtering waste, balancing fluids, and regulating blood pressure. When the kidneys are damaged and can no longer function properly, it leads to a condition called kidney failure, also known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Recognizing the symptoms of kidney failure early can help you seek timely medical care and prevent further complications.

What Is Kidney Failure?

Kidney failure occurs when the kidneys lose their ability to filter waste and excess fluids from the blood. This waste can build up in the body and lead to serious health problems. Kidney failure can be sudden (acute) or develop over time (chronic).

Common Symptoms of Kidney Failure

Here are some warning signs and symptoms to watch out for:

1. Swelling (Edema)

When the kidneys are not able to remove extra fluid from the body, it can lead to swelling in the legs, ankles, feet, face, or hands.

2. Changes in Urination

You may notice:

• Reduced or increased frequency of urination

• Dark-colored, foamy, or bloody urine

• Pain or difficulty while urinating

• No urine output in severe cases

3. Fatigue and Weakness

When waste builds up in the body, it can cause you to feel tired, weak, and mentally foggy. Anemia (low red blood cell count) is also common in kidney failure and contributes to fatigue.

4. Shortness of Breath

Excess fluid in the body can accumulate in the lungs, making it hard to breathe. Additionally, anemia may also make you feel short of breath during simple activities.

5. Loss of Appetite and Nausea

A buildup of waste in the blood can affect your digestive system, leading to a poor appetite, nausea, vomiting, and even a metallic taste in the mouth.

6. Muscle Cramps and Twitches

Electrolyte imbalances caused by kidney failure can lead to painful muscle cramps, especially in the legs.

7. Itchy Skin

Toxins that are normally filtered by the kidneys can cause persistent itching when they accumulate in the bloodstream.

8. High Blood Pressure

Kidneys help control blood pressure. When they’re not working properly, blood pressure can rise, sometimes leading to headaches or blurred vision.

9. Difficulty Concentrating

The buildup of toxins in the blood can affect brain function, leading to confusion, difficulty concentrating, or even memory problems.

When to See a Doctor

If you experience any of these symptoms—especially if they’re persistent or worsening—it’s important to consult your doctor. Early detection and treatment can slow the progression of kidney disease and improve quality of life.

Summary

Kidney failure is a serious condition, but with awareness and proper medical care, it can be managed. Staying hydrated, maintaining a healthy blood pressure, controlling blood sugar, and getting regular check-ups are key steps in protecting your kidney health.

If you have existing health conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, talk to your doctor about regular kidney function tests.
