Ajwain (Carom Seeds) - Health Benefits

Ajwain seeds are a spice that is commonly used in Indian cooking. They have a strong, bitter, and pungent taste, similar to thyme or oregano. They come from a herb plant that is related to celery, parsley, and fennel. Ajwain seeds are not only good for flavoring food, but also for healing various health issues, such as:

  • Improving digestion: Ajwain seeds help in breaking down food and releasing digestive juices and bile. They can also ease stomach problems, such as indigestion, bloating, gas, acidity, and ulcers. You can chew some raw seeds with water, or drink some boiled water with seeds in it, to improve your digestion.

  • Fighting infections: Ajwain seeds have oils that can kill harmful bacteria and fungi, such as those that cause food poisoning and other stomach troubles. They can also make your immune system stronger and protect you from infections. You can add some seeds to your food, or apply some crushed seeds on the infected area, to fight infections.

  • Lowering blood pressure: Ajwain seeds can prevent calcium from entering the blood vessels in the heart, which can lower the pressure on the heart and improve blood flow. They also have potassium, which can balance the salt levels in the body and regulate blood pressure. You can eat some roasted seeds with honey, or add some seeds to your tea or water, to lower your blood pressure.

  • Relieving cough and congestion: Ajwain seeds can clear the mucus from the nose and throat, and make breathing easier. They can also open up the airways, which can help people with asthma. They have a warm and spicy effect, which can calm the throat and chest. You can breathe in the steam of boiled water and seeds, or gargle with the water, to relieve cough and congestion.

  • Reducing pain and inflammation: Ajwain seeds have properties that can reduce pain and swelling. They can be helpful for people with arthritis, toothache, earache, and menstrual cramps. You can make a paste of crushed seeds and apply it on the painful area, or soak some seeds in warm water and take a bath with it, to reduce pain and inflammation.

Ajwain seeds are a natural and effective way to treat many health problems. But they should be used carefully, as too much of them can cause side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, allergic reactions, and bleeding disorders. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking any medicine should talk to their doctor before using ajwain seeds. Ajwain seeds are a great way to improve your health and well-being.
